(9) Decarbonization of transportation (Filip Černoch) 1. 12. 2020

Main topic: What is the future of low carbon transportation?

Outline: In comparison to the power sector the transportation is known for its resistance to decarbonization. In the lecture, some of the systemic barriers of possible structural change will be discussed, mainly the economics of the PV, technical, and socio-cultural issues.

Sources:  Are electric cars good or bad for the environment? See here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RhtiPefVzM). Socio-cultural consequences of the shift in transportation are discussed in the article by Benjamin Sovacool (bellow). An interesting debate about the impact of decarbonization of transportation on the oil market and consumption was held at Energy Post (bellow). A detailed description of the current situation is provided by the IEA (bellow).

Think about: Choosing a new car, what factors do you consider? Is the impact of a given vehicle on the environment one of them?
