Learning about the population from a sample: Statistical inference.

Learning practical skills: Comparison of means.

Required:

Read chapter about statistical inference from Kellstedt, Paul M. and Guy D. Whitten. The Fundamentals of Political Science Research. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. It's chapter 7 in the 2009 edition (in the 2013 edition it's chapter 6). In addition, read a section titled "Example 2: Difference of means", this section begins on p. 145 in the 2009 edition of the book and on page 156 in the 2013 edition.

As you read the following readings, try to read the equations too. If the equations seem too difficult, skip them and focus on the conceptual explanation instead. Some students understand things better through equations, others learn the same thing better if it's presented as a text. The book offers both options.

Recommended:

Chapters 6 and 7 in The Essentials of Political Analysis 3rd ed. by Phillip H. Pollock III. (CQ Press, 2009). Available in the library.
