Electricity Industry: Renewable Energy

Revisiting electricity markets: market design 25. 10. 2022

Content: How are electricity markets designed in Europe?

Study materials: Let's start by a review of the general design of electricity market (spoiler: it is a layered stack of multiple markets operating simultaneously!) introduced accessibly by Bilal Dahlab. Then, let's move to TU Denmark's Pierre Pinson's historical take on market liberalization (check his other videos and get one renewable energy course for free). Notice how liberalization introduced all sorts of new actors and agendas and, consequently, more market features to be fine-tuned. Then watch this video by Fabien Roques for a basic comparison of the European and the U.S. regulatory tradition. And as always, google terms you do not understand. Finally, read this comprehensive yet brief primer on electricity market design by Peter Cramton:

Get ready: First, try to come up with as many distinctive features by which we can differentiate between the individual sources for electricity production. Which ones are typical for conventional sources? Which for renewable energy? Are there differences within these groups?  Second, once you have the list of features, think which ones are reflected in the current European market design and how?
