Renewable Energy and the Energy Transition

Transition pathways, enabling technologies, transition issues and controversies 9. 11. 2023

Study materials will be updated by early November.

Transition pathways are intrinsically connected with transition-enabling technologies. We will discuss two of them in particular: battery storage and hydrogen. Let's start by this primer on battery typology. If you want to know more about how (lithium-ion) batteries actually work and understand better all that talk battery chemistries, spend additional 17 minutes with this immensely detailed dissection of the technology's functionality. Next, learn what hydrogen is and what role is it expected to play in the transition. Then take a look at the various means of producing hydrogen, as they form a significant part of the current debate about the future of the technology.

Finally, study IRENA's report on the geopolitics of critical materials. Start with the Executive Summary (pages 12-21) and then focus on the Introduction (pages 22-32) and Chapter 2: Trade, Security and Interdependence (subsections 2.1 and 2.2, pages 34-66). If you find it interesting, read the whole thing.

For energy storage enthusiasts, I highly recommend the book by Schmidt & Staffell.
