Relational Maintenance through Technology: Dating, Romantic Relationships and Family Dynamics

In this interactive lecture, we will explore how we bring our relationships into being and maintain them in and through technology. While information and communication technology (ICT) facilitates communication in our personal relationships and families, ICTs also displace face-to-face communication and intimacy. The advantages and disadvantages of maintaining our relationships through these means will be discussed, and we will examine concepts such as self-disclosure, rejection, ghosting, platform affordances, relational development models, and interpersonal satisfaction and well-being.
