Then, we will move to the discussion of your group activities. Please work in groups.

The assignment aims to practice applying the sociological lens to studying identity.

Practice on your final task

In the previous class, we broke into groups of 2-4 people. You've shared which identities you will explore in the interview. Work in groups and answer the questions:

  • Who do you plan to interview?
  • What questions will you ask? Give 2-3 questions.
  • What social theories can you recommend to use to analyze the topic better?

Present your group work: What challenges did you face while researching? What is your expectation to get finally?

The task for the final task (Interview):

 1) Develop a guide (tool) for conducting an ethnographic interview (in-depth interview) with 6-10 (open) questions related to the study of an aspect of identity that interests you. This can be an aspect of gender identity, social class, ethnicity, belonging to a particular organization, or intersectionality.

To develop the guide, you can use the tips provided in a separate document uploaded to the information system (Tips for creating the tool and processing the data);

2) Conduct an in-depth (ethnographic) interview with the respondent in English (or any other language) according to the developed guide. The interview should not exceed 40 minutes.

3) Make a transcript of the audio recording (you can use the apps suggested in the document)/translate it in English;

4) Upload the tool, recording, and transcript in English to the Final Task folder - you can create a folder with your number or name.

Assignment evaluation system and criteria:

The conduct of the in-depth interview on the identity issue – for better practicing and understanding the ways of studying identity - has 10 points.

Please note that in case of violation of the deadlines, 1 point will be deducted from the final grade for each day of delay in uploading the assignment.

I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that the material you have developed will become the basis for the final exam assignment within the course.

For advice on the developed tool or other related issues, you can contact me via e-mail or in person, having arranged a personal meeting in advance at the FSS office or online.

Consultations (in person or via e-mail) on this assignment will be provided weekly until December 15th.

The final result of your interview - transcript and the guide for the interview (the research tool) should be uploaded in the Homework Vaults in the FINAL TASK FOLDER not later than December 19th.

The deadline for the Exam paper is January 16th, 2025 - Thursday by 15.00.

Please upload your papers to the Homework Vaults - Final exam assignment folder.

The works will be evaluated by January 23rd, 2025.
