                                    real and probable situation

                               IF + past simple, WOULD + infinitive


Meaning



                                  unreal and improbable situation




Both, first and second conditionals refer to the future.



3rd conditional


If I had been in the accident, I would have died there.

                      Meaning



IF + past perfect, WOULD HAVE + infinitive




                                                                      unreal and improbable situation in the past




The third conditional refers to the past.
