Prolapsus ani et recti

prolapsus ani – only the anal lining (radial folds) protrudes - mucosal prolapse in haemorrhoids

prolapsus recti – the entire wall of the rectum is erupting (circular folds)

 

-          it can be sigmoido-rectal or recto-rectal invagination

-          the cause is weakness of the hanging apparatus of the rectum (congenital or acquired)

clinical symptoms and diagnosis

-          conical formation protruding from the anal opening, in which there is blood pooling and superficial ulceration, possibly gangrene of the mucosa (invagination - strangulation) with pain, bleeding and incontinence

-          diagnosis is made by aspecia and indagation (reduced sphincter tone), rectoscopy, defecography, anorectal manometry and EMG to assess sphincter function


treatment

-          conservative: pelvic floor rehabilitation, dietary modification

-          surgical - resection of prolapsed tissue or fixation of prolapsed rectum (rectopexy)- pelvic floorplasty
