Module 10: Rare Diseases & Orphan Drugs

Seminar introduction

"Rare diseases comprise from 5000 to 8000 lifethreatening or chronically debilitating diseases which together affect from 27 and 36 million people in the European Union. 💊 A lack of efficient treatment and accurate diagnosis for the majority of rare diseases represents an enormous unmet medical need and a major challenge for public health. " (Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (European Commission)

👁️ This seminar talks about an area in global health very often overlooked-  members of society suffering from rare diseases. Topics will include access to medicines, the pricing mechanisms involved with orphan drugs and potential connections with personalised medicine. 

Learning objectives:


After participating in this seminar:

  • Learners will be knowledgeable about the reality and key problems people living with rare diseases face in their everyday lives. 
  • Learners will learn about the concept and governing acts of orphan drugs. 
  • Learners will train their critical and analytical skills in relation to rare disease management and learn about key actions taken within the Europe.
