Upon completion of this instructional unit, the student will be able to:
• interpret standard liver tests and explain their significance in the diagnosis of liver diseases
• define and categorize jaundice, its clinical symptoms, and distinguish between types based on clinical
laboratory tests
• explain the mechanism of liver damage caused by alcohol and the influence of alcohol on drug metabolism
• explain the mechanism of liver damage caused by paracetamol and the method of treating paracetamol
overdose
• discuss the correct choice of laboratory tests in a given clinical context
• discuss laboratory results in the given clinical context, recognize clinically significant and life-threatening
values
• discuss the indication of paraclinical examinations and their appropriate timing in the given clinical context
• explain the treatment procedure for acute gastrointestinal bleeding
• discuss the course of resuscitation in a hospital setting, cooperation with the ICU team
• discuss indications for performing a pathological-anatomical autopsy and other types of autopsies
• explain the classification of liver failure and possible treatment approaches
• discuss possible causes of consciousness disorders in the given clinical context
• apply knowledge in the treatment of hypoglycemia
