Week 6 - Causation in Epidemiology
Presentation
Please watch the recorded video of the seminar below.
Please find the slides of the seminar here.
Practice
During the seminar of this week, every 3-5 students will present a short presentation (10 minutes max.) on disease etiology.
Please find the following instructions:
Co-workers
1. Each working group will consist of 3-5 students who are supposed to collaborate to prepare a short presentation and present it during the classroom.
2. Please check the file below in order to know who are your co-workers in order to arrange with them your presentation, and read the instructions of your group exercise carefully.
Duration
3. The duration of the presentation can not exceed 10 minutes. It should be designed by PowerPoint or Prezi.
4. For PowerPoint presentations, 7 slides will be an optimal number.
Topic
5. In your presentation, you should present the best available evidence that supports the causal relationship between a certain risk factor and a pre-specified disease.
6. The best available evidence is usually driven from the systematic review, controlled trials, cohort studies, etc.
7. You have to use the research skills that you have gained so far during this course to search in PubMed, Epistemonikos, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for the best available evidence that supports your claim.
8. You should summarize the study/studies that you will present for supporting your claim by highlighting their key findings and their limitations.
Please check the conceptual model of your assigned disease. Select -at least- two risk factors that may cause this disease. Look for the best available evidence that can support why these causes are considered risk factors of that disease. Each risk factor can be presented in 1-3 slides, and it has to be supported by at least 1 study.
1. Diabetes Mellitus
2. Oral Cancer
3. Chronic Hypertension
4. Liver Cancer
5. Lung Cancer
