Gastrointestinal infections including CDI


Behavioral changes, loss of skin elasticity (lower skin turgor, sunken eyes and decreased  large fontanelle) and dry mucous membranes lead to hospitalization in children
Bacterial GIT infection is usually self-limited condition, toxigennic C difficile requires a special approach
Zoonotic bacteria (enteric Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia) can imitate appendicitis
HUS is severe complication of EHEC infection
Bloody diarrhea, markers of hemolytic anemia and elevated renal parameters are characteristic signs of HUS
Antibiotics are contraindicated if HUS is suspected
