G L O B A L G R E E N G R A N T S F U N D 2 0 0 2 ANNUAL REPORT W www.greengrants.org We make small grants (typically $500 to $5,000) to grassroots groups working to help people protect the environment, live sustainably, preserve biodiversity, and gain a voice in their own future. To identify prospective grantees we rely on a network of volunteer advisors around the world who help us know first hand where the most exciting and promising work is happening. Cover photo: Coal mining. Dhanbad, Bihar State, India, 1989. Sebastio Salgado/Amazonas Images (Contact Press Images) IIt's been a tough year for optimists, but from our vantage we are witnessing steady upward trends. All around the world ordinary people are taking the initiative to protect the environment, and we at Greengrants are improving our ability to find and fund them. The good news in 2002 is that, despite the economy, we have increased our grantmaking. We made 401 grants (up from 282) in 70 countries and we continue to expand our grantmaking advisor network. We've had the honor of supporting promising grassroots projects in some of the world's most desperate places. Of course, the bad news is that the economic downturn puts enormous strains on even the strongest economies. To meet immediate needs, governments often take a short-term view and are tempted by expediency and unfortunate trade-offs. There were a lot of poor environmental choices made around the world last year, and many people will suffer. But we do this work because we believe that people working in their own villages and cities can prevent environmental, social and economic catastrophe. We have seen the remarkable power of grassroots action in the United States, and we know its potential elsewhere. Our goal is to support local efforts where they arise and provide people the financial resources to work toward positive change. I hope you can share our optimism and join us. Chet Tchozewski, Executive Director GlobalGreen grants fu Tapping local wisdom and energy To identify our grantees we rely on a network of nearly eighty volunteer advisors around the world who help us learn about great local grassroots organizations. Through these advisors--scientists, journalists, engineers, physicians and activist leaders--we leverage local expertise and create a system that puts its confidence in the wisdom of the people closest to the action. Our advisor network also helps us create simple grantmaking procedures to minimize red tape and streamline grant delivery. This helps us keep our overhead costs at a minimum and put more money into the field. And advisors can be there to provide moral support, mentoring and monitoring to grantees, helping them overcome the many obstacles they face. (See a complete list of advisors on pages 19-20.) Building a global community Our grantmaking advisor network offers benefits beyond the sum total of our grants. This peer community, driven by collaborative energy, great ideas and a shared vision of a healthy planet, provides opportunities for a truly international approach to grassroots work. Several of our regional advisory boards may soon spin off as independant grant makers helping to further build local capacity to work toward change. As we find ways to broaden this network and facilitate collaboration across language and cultural barriers, we can bridge the gulf that needlessly separates people working toward shared goals. Our advisors now seek each other out to confer on issues that may cross continents and oceans. We have seen the power that this collaboration can have on every participant in this network, and the better we can link this community, the better we can reckon with the environmental and social challenges of the coming century. Grantmaking on a personal scale Global Greengrants Fund makes small grants to grassroots groups working toward environmental health, justice and sustainability in developing countries around the world. Our grants fund grassroots action in some of the world's most despoiled and impoverished places. Grassroots groups are key to halting cycles of poverty, powerlessness and environmental devastation. Although they almost always lack financial resources, grassroots groups are a rich source of hope and energy, and they can be a powerful force for environmental and social progress. Every day new leaders emerge from communities all over the world. Our grants can be there to support them in the crucial early stages of a project. The great advances we now take for granted in the United States, like suffrage, civil rights and clean water, all started as grassroots movements. The grassroots is where durable change begins. 2 fund at work Return on investment In a way, we are in the business of hope. Greengrants is one of only a few sources of support to grassroots groups around the world. Less than 2 percent of U.S. philanthropy goes to international causes, and only a fraction of that goes to support grassroots environmental work. Until recently we could assume that environmental degradation in far away places would have little effect on us. But with each passing year we learn more about the interdependencies that link our fate with others on the planet. And it's more than climate change, drifting pollution, depleted fisheries, and other physical assaults on our shared planet. It's also the weakened economies and deteriorating societies that can no longer be relied upon to bear up against the economic pressures that environmental destruction will bring. Support of grassroots groups builds a capacity for social and environmental progress, and it should be a strategic imperative for anyone concerned about increased political tensions and economic instability in the world today. Many countries are on the brink of collapse. Most people on the planet do not have access to basic services. In the world's most fragile places, support of grassroots efforts can be a democratizing influence that helps people gain the tools to work toward positive change. If transformation is inevitable, let it take the best possible forms. 3 In Partnership with Donors Our donors increasingly recognize the valuable service that Greengrants offers. Foundations appreciate our ability to broaden their portfolio of grantees and process grants at minimal cost. Individual supporters see Greengrants as their own personal program officers. Our advisor network gives them extraordinary reach into some of the most remote places in the world. By reducing barriers to grassroots grantmaking Greengrants helps donors participate in one of the most effective and leveraged forms of philanthropy. We also offer donor-advised grantmaking and other programs tailored to the interests of our donors. As a 501(c)(3) public charity, all contributions to Global Greengrants Fund are tax deductible under U.S. law. Sugarcane cutting. Pradopolis, So Paulo, Brazil, 1987. Sebastio Salgado/Amazonas Images (Contact Press Images) IIn a departure from our usual approach, this year's annual report presents photographs by the renowned Brazilian photographer, Sebastio Salgado, whose work documents the lives of ordinary people who often face extraordinary struggle. Mr. Salgado has made his mark in photography by following his instinct for honesty and his passion for hard work. Given the hard work and perseverance of our grantees, it seemed appropriate to draw this photo essay largely from Salgado's book,Workers, an immersion in the lives of people around the world who toil with their hands. This selection offers a glimpse into the work lives of people who labor in service to industrial agriculture, manufacturing, large-scale development and resource extraction. We offer this brief photo essay not to critique but to honor them. Salgado's photographs capture the hardship in people's lives without ever allowing us to lose sight of their dignity so that they become at once more vivid to us and more challenging. Part of the power of his work resides in the tension between his keen eye and his empathy. For many of us, Salgado's photographs illuminate the limits of our own humanity. We can be caught up in the composition and the textures for only so long before we recognize that the people in the photographs have made a connection with us and that our response to them will inevitably come up short. Ironically, those of us who decry the destructive effects of industrial development may experience even greater dissonance as we connect with these workers. No matter how dedicated any of us might be, it is impossible to shake the sense that our response to poverty, environmental devastation and social injustice always comes up short. But perhaps somewhere in the act of lingering for a moment with Salgado's subjects we begin to reckon with our limits. With luck, we understand a bit more clearly that we, too, have work to do and that we can join them in our own way, using our own sets of talents and resources. This is the power of the Greengrants model. We can help you join in the work of people around the world who are taking the initiative to improve their communities, their lives and the planet we all share. We hope that this document will open your mind to people, like you, whose lives are shaped by their work, and to the rich opportunity that Global Greengrants Fund presents. Sebastio Salgado/Amazonas Images (Contact Press Images) WWhere does our work take us? Are we isolated by it, or does it bring us closer to our families and communities? Does it tap our energies or rob us of our will? Is it benign? Is it destructive? Beyond survival, what is the purpose of our work? We are creatures designed for work. From the earliest age we crave work, tirelessly gathering, assembling, building. Work gives form to our lives. It ennobles us; it demeans us. It enriches us; it steals from us. Many of us have vast freedoms when it comes to our choice of work, and we can control its influence on other aspects of our lives. But even the most fortunate among us cannot escape its pull. We work instinctively. And when we are able to and so inclined, we take advantage of our freedom to pursue a passion. Perhaps it's the piano or the paint brush. Perhaps it's the just cause, the pursuit of a belief. As we celebrate work, we need especially to recognize the many people who choose a work life that returns something to all of us. And we need to remember that many of these people are not privileged and often make great sacrifices in their lives. And what more can we do? At very least, those of us with the freedom to do so should turn some portion of our time and energy to sharpening our awareness of how lives are lived elsewhere on the planet and how we might be able to share some of our good fortune. We should let our work take us places where it can intersect with the work of people whose goals and values we share, and where we might gain the resolve and courage to make sacrifices of our own. Work is endless because work is in our nature. And work also can be boundless. That is its burden and its power. 10 Imbabura Province, Ecuador, 1998. Water supplies are far from the camps, some refugees have to walk 20 kilometers to collect water. Sebastio Salgado/Amazonas Images (Contact Press Images) SSebastio Salgado's interest in people who work with their hands is inspired, in part, by his recognition that such work is now a diminishing part our lives. In some places, such work also represents a diminishing opportunity. This photograph of refugee children is taken from Salgado's book Migrations, which offers glimpses into the lives of people in places where work is often impossible. Salgado's photographs take us from the cane field to the construction site to the gold mine in images that never belie the amount of toil in the lives of his subjects. And yet these lives seem immensely more hopeful than those of the world's millions of refugees. Perhaps refugees represent a failure of work. Somewhere a community or nation was unable to hold itself together in the face of war or famine or some other overwhelming force. Will vast regions of the developing world undergo a shift from societies of workers struggling to create a future to new societies of refugees with no future at all? In too many places environmental devastation is pacing social and political deterioration, and the combination creates a deepening and more intractable crisis. No one on the planet will remain untouched if trends continue. But it is hard to imagine that human beings are incapable of reversing this. We are clever and energetic and our hearts are good. There is no single solution. Solutions must be as varied as the people and communities Greengrants serves. And solutions must come from the places where the challenges are greatest. Solutions must tap the energy of people working to improve their lives. They must foster social and environment justice and help people gain a voice in their own governance. They must inspire others to action. Above all, they must respect the wisdom and dignity of ordinary people and support the efforts of those extraordinary people who come along every so often with a great idea and the energy to pursue it. 16 Rwandan refugee camp of Benako, Tanzania, 1994. Sebastio Salgado/Amazonas Images (Contact Press Images) 18 The World of Global G Global Greengrants Fund's advisory boards bring together activist leaders who identify grassroots groups that are working effectively around the world. These advisory boards also nurture networks that can work across barriers of language and culture to find creative solutions to environmental and social challenges. Our regional advisory boards allow us to tap into local activist circles and support initiatives of high local and regional importance. Our Global Advisory Board brings together representatives of five international organizations that work closely with grassroots groups and help link grantees to global networks. It helps us reach places not yet served by our regional boards and supplements the work of regional boards where they overlap. Our International Financial Institutions Advisory Board has a similar global reach and identifies local opportunities to address activities of the World Bank and other financial institutions. In June 2002 we finalized our separation from Tides Foundation and became an independent 501(c)(3) public charity. This year we also passed the $2 million mark in revenue and made 401 grants (up from 282 last year) in 70 countries. To anticipate this and future growth, and to take over administrative duties from Tides, we increased our U.S. staff to eight, and were still able to hold our administrative and fundraising costs to 15 percent. This also was a big year for growth in our advisory network. We added seven new advisory boards, more than doubling the number of our volunteer advisors, and we added overseas administrative support. Our increased staffing and advisory board support gives us the capacity to dramatically increase our grantmaking. With continued growth in revenues in 2003, we expect economies of scale to reduce our overhead ratio as last year's investment in new personnel, procedures and system infrastructure begins to pay off. Our financial position this year was strengthened by several large gifts from donors who have either made multi-year commitments or have indicated their strong interest in continuing to support grassroots grantmaking through Greengrants. We believe that our ability to provide a high level of service to our donors and minimize costs will allow us to create a stable long-term vehicle for international small grantmaking that also offers an attractive opportunity for an increasing number of donor partners. We help donors broaden their giving portfolios, extend their philanthropic reach and create an international small grants program at low cost. We can provide additional services tailored to specific donor interests, including donor advised grantmaking. Greengrants is dedicated to keeping all costs as low as possible to maximize the amount of money that goes to our grantees. We do not use direct mail or phone solicitations, and we limit our publications to a bare minimum.
