   Angie: When is it? (ask)

   A. asked when it was.

   Delia: On Saturday. (reply) I don’t want to go but I couldn’t say no. (add)

   D. replied that it was on Saturday/ the following Saturday. She added she didn’t want to go
   but she hadn’t been able to say no/ to turn down the invitation.

   Angie: Why don’t you phone him on Saturday and say you don’t feel well? (suggest)

   A., suggested phoning Paul/ that she should phone Paul/ she phoned Paul on the Saturday to say
   that she didn’t feel well.

   Delia: Are you going to go to Paul’s party? (ask)

   D. asked J. if he was going to Paul’s party.

   John: I don’t think so. I went last year and it was really boring. (say) Are you? (ask)

   J. said (that) he didn’t think so. He had gone last year/ the previous year/ the year before
