How to organize your writing description


1. Follow this order:


   A  Say who the person is and explain how you got to know him/her/them

   B  Describe his/her/their appearance

   C  Describe his/her/their character


2.  Remember to give examples and reasons for what you say.

3.  Write a first draft and check it.

4.  Write a final version and check it.



Model composition


I met Ann at grammar school five years ago. We have been friends ever since.

Ann has straight blond hair, a broad forehead, a turned up nose and small ears. She has a kind,
intelligent round face with lively blue eyes.

Regarding her character and personality, she is almost always cheerful but can be serious as well.
She is interested in science and computers; in fact she has been studying computer science at a
college. Whenever you meet her, she enthusiastically tells you about the latest scientific
discoveries. Although she is intelligent, you never feel inferior. She is a good listener and has
often given me good advice. She is very generous. For example, she once gave me a very expensive
set of books. She is reliable and a true friend.

At her house you always get a generous welcome. However, she is rather untidy and you have to put
up with piles of books and papers everywhere. This doesn’t matter, because Ann’s friendship is
worth more than a tidy room.
