Course Requirements and Links for Independent Reading 
At the start of the semester, course attendants choose two novels of interest which they 
will read during the duration of the semester. The novels ought to be written by native speakers 
of English between 1900 and 2000. Although the choice should be independent, some writers are 
suggested in ​Úplné informace o předmětu​ in the IS. Before reading the novels, attendants specify 
their choice in the table linked ​here.​ At that point, they might be contacted by the instructor who 
might inquire as to how the novels were chosen.  
During the semester attendants write a report on each novel: both reports are to be 
uploaded into Odevzdávárna folders called “First Report” and “Second Report,” the first by 
March 20, the second by April 20. In each of the reports students describe what they found 
interesting in the selected novels (e.g., class struggle, rising tension between …. and ….., 
complication of understanding between ethnics or characters, features of society which the given 
novel describes and how these are no longer necessary or valid in contemporary society, or other 
topics of their interest which are reflected in the novels).  The students do not need to quote in 
the reports, paraphrasing of relevant information is acceptable.  
Course attendants are given credit for writing the two reports and for extending one of 
them into a longer report (see ​Úplné informace o předmětu​ in the IS for length). However, before 
doing so, they are asked to specify the topic of the longer report ​here​ in up to four sentences no 
later than by the end of the study period. The longer report should also include quotation from 
the chosen novel and for examples see sample essays uploaded into ​Studijní materiály ​of the 
course in the IS. The final report does not need to make use of secondary sources. Once finished, 
it is to be uploaded into Odevzdávárna folder called “Final Report” by June 10. Finally, 
questions can be resolved via face to face consultations or e­mail.
