1. Rewrite each pair of sentences as a single sentence, using ‘so’ in a RESULT clause:

a) They were feeling really tired. They went to bed early last night.

They were feeling really tired, so they went to bed early last night.

b) I wasn’t able to do the homework. I forgot to take my textbook home with me.

I forgot to take my textbook home with me, so I wasn’t able to do the homework.

c) Susan is in a popular TV show. People recognize her when she’s out shopping.

Susan is in a popular TV show, so people recognize her when she’s out shopping.

 

2. Is ‘so’ in the sentences above used as a CONJUNCT or CONJUNCTION?

3. Add one of these clauses, changed to include ‘so…that’ or ‘such…that’, to each of the following sentences:

That class was early                                                  We had a wonderful time on holiday

The fire spread rapidly through their cabin               Wendy’s children had bad colds this morning

You and I don’t have much money                            The fog was thick Ö

 

Example: The fog was so thick (that) you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.

 

a) The fire spread so rapidly through their cabin (that) they couldn’t save any of their belongings.

b) Wendy’s children had such bad colds this morning that she couldn’t let them go to school.

c) You and I don’t have so much money (that) we can just throw it away carelessly.

d) We had such a wonderful time on holiday that we didn’t want to come home.

e) That class was so early (that) everyone had trouble staying awake in it.

 

4. Combine each pair of sentences without changing their order. Put the word in brackets either at the beginning or in the middle.

a) The player had an injury. He had to leave the field. (due to)

Due to an injury, the player had to leave the field.

b) I’m going to move abroad. The weather is so awful here. (because)

I’m going to move abroad because the weather is so awful here.

c) I’d worked all weekend. I had Monday off. (seeing)

Seeing (that) I’d worked all weekend, I had Monday off.

Also possible: Seeing as how I’d worked all weekend, I had Monday off.

d) I didn’t buy the coat. It was so expensive. (as)

I didn’t buy the coat as it was so expensive.

e) There is so much street crime. You’d better take a taxi. (since)

Since there is so much street crime, you’d better take a taxi.
