Course requirements & exam

To complete this course successfully, you need to pass an exam.

You're, of course, encouraged to take part in the activities I offer here in the syllabus since they are designed to help you prepare for the exam. However, they're not a prerequisite for the exam. In other words, if you don't complete them, you will still be allowed to sign up for the exam.

The final exam consists of a written part and an oral part. 

THE WRITTEN PART is made up of two separate ONLINE tests: 
1) listening, reading, writing and grammar (80 minutes)
2) terminology (15 minutes)

Grammar

  • multiple choice (choose the best option)

Writing

  • you will be asked to write a short approx. 170-word essay on a SNE topic
  • read the instructions carefully
    • are you supposed to support one point of view?
    • are you supposed to disscus pros & cons?
  • what are the three main parts of an essay?
  • how can you connect your ideas into meaningful units?

Terminology

  • involves translating specialised terms from Czech into English

POINTS & PASS MARK
  • 60 points (listening, reading, C + D grammar, sentence transformation, word formation, writing) 
  • 10 points (SNE terminology)
  • 45 points (pass mark)

THE ORAL PART also consists of two parts and will be taken ONLINE via MS TEAMS or any other platform that works for you.
1) monologue (3 minutes):

  • introduce yourself
  • talk about your field of study and specialisation
  • talk about your Master's thesis (topic, research questions and possible solutions)
  • talk about your future career path

2) discussion (about 6 minutes)

  • you and your partner will pick a SNE topic and discuss it
  • remember to use phrases for interaction

POINTS & PASS MARK
  • 30 points (total for speaking)
  • 20 points (pass mark)
TOTAL PASS MARK (written + oral parts)

  • 65 points
