Social roles in teaching

Status is our relative social position within a group, while a role is the part our society expects us to play in a given status. This social stucturing allows greater predictability in a social environment.   When it comes to acquiring social roles, we usually distinguish among roles that are ascribed (role of a man or a woman, being a firstborn child) and acquired (by doing something - a woman becomes a mother by having a baby). Some roles can be forced upon us (black sheep of a family or an unemployed person). It is common for people to have multiple overlapping statuses and roles, which can create internal and/or external conflicts.
