CHAPTER 3: Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

Why to study this chapter?

In the following chapter, we are going to talk about children, who have problems with the behavior expected at school. There are many learners, who do not perform well at school and do not fulfil the expectations of others (their parents, teachers, schoolmates, etc.) despite their good intellectual abilities. Teachers of those children often complain that pupils with behavior disorders are the most difficult to deal with in the classroom. Many teachers feel that these pupils make the conditions for teaching difficult and limit the possibilities of other children's learning (Vojtová, 2005). Also parents are most reluctant to place their kids in the same classroom with children with behavioral difficulties (Pančocha, 2014). This chapter will, therefore, introduce the main issues around behavioral and emotional disorders for better understanding of the difficult area.

Discuss with your colleague about the topic:

Watch the instructional video from the year 1947.
Discuss about the content with your colleague and answer the following questions:

  1. How did teaching and behavior of children in classroom changed since 1947?
  2. Do you remember your teacher solving classroom behavior problems? What are a good and not so good exaples of behavior problem sollutions?
  3. Would the strategies presented in the instructional video from 1947 still work in the classroom today?
