Lesson 7 /ˌlesən ˈsevən/

The metaphor of bricks and cement

The content words are strong and keep their shape, like bricks, while the function words are weak and get crushed between, like the cement. From the listener's perspective, it is the function words which are most difficult to catch because they get squashed out of shape and hard to recognise.

Linking

People will understand you if you don't use linking when you speak, but linking helps you to speak faster and more smoothly. It is very important to understand linking in order to improve your listening skills.
