Fonetika a fonologie 2B - AJ

Introduction + requirements

Introduction

To be covered this semester

1) Phonemes

We will revise all the phonemes from the phonemic chart.

2) Suprasegmental areas

After revising phonemes, we will look at weak forms, linking, word stress, sentence stress, rhythm, intonation. We will focus on phonetic transcription and practice it often. Later on in the semester, we will start practising dictations (you listen and note down the phonetic transcription).

3) Jazz chants, songs and Reading books for children.

Throughout the semester, we will work with materials for children. You will also create your own jazz chant and practice reading a book to a child.

Requirements

Please watch out for the deadlines set in MS Teams. If you cannot see the tasks or access your MS Teams group, please message your teacher.

1) Reading progress - MS Teams

This allows us to assess your pronunciation.

There will four Reading progress tasks available. You choose three of these tasks. You have to get at least 80% out of two of them. Each individual word will be assessed in terms of pronunciation.

If you are not successful, you can do the task again.

2) Reflective journal - MS Teams

The aim of the task to make you reflect on your learning and progress. You need to write 100 words entry for each week of the semester. The focus is on your pronunciation (and phonetic transcription) learning or your experience from Phonetics classes.

You will hand your journal in twice this semester - please see deadlines in MS Teams.

The template is available here:

3) Teaching practice task - Read to a child - MS Teams

Choose a children's book to read to a child. Then write a reflection on the experience. Answer the following questions:

  • What was the book you chose and why did you choose it?
  • What was your aim for reading the book to the child?
  • How did you prepare for the reading session and what strategies did you use to engage the child? How did you monitor the child's understanding of the words and the story?
  • How did the child respond during and after the reading session?
  • What did you learn from the child's response?
  • How did you feel about this experience?
  • What would you do differently next time?

The language should reflect B2 level of English. Minimum 400 words.

4) Jazz chant - MS Teams

This will assess how you work with rhythm. You will create your own jazz chant (it must rhyme) and upload a video of yourself saying the chant into MS Teams.

Jazz chants, their aims and characteristics will be discussed in clas. There are many examples in this interactive syllabus.

5) Credit test - in person

The test will assess your knowledge of pronunciation and phonetic transcription. It will include a dictation that you will transcribe into phonetic transcription. We will practise in class but also practise independently, for example with tophonetics.com

Materials for Week 1

Here you can find materials that will be used in class and that you can use to practise independently.

Working with songs, books, and chants

Please remember the rule of three:

  1. First, listen.
  2. Then, lipsync.
  3. Finally, read/sing along.

To make the most of the material, use the extra materials, think about what pronunciation exactly is practised, and how you could use this with your pupils.

Introduction to phonetics with My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady is a musical that is built around learning correct pronunciation.
