Vocabularies

First of all, study vocabularies. You can find them in your study materials (Studijní materiály - Rocks), or you can use the follow link.

WHAT ARE ROCKS?

Everyone knows what rocks are. They are lying on the ground everywhere! They are the mountains, and canyons that you can’t help but notice. We have all thrown them, sat on them, and dug them out of our gardens. However, to pin down an exact definition… that is something not all of us could do.
A rock is:

  • A solid
  • Naturally occurring
  • Is made up of minerals or mineral like matter.

KINDS OF ROCKS

The three types of rocks—igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic—are all subject to processes that change one rock type into another. The images below show several types of rocks undergoing these processes.

Igneous rocks Sedimentary rocks Metamorphic rocks

The names of the rock types refer to the way the rocks are formed. Igneous rocks are formed from fiery molten magma. Metamorphic rocks form under intense heat and pressure. Sedimentary rocks form by weathering.

Rock Cycle Processess

The Earth's rocks do not stay the same forever. They are continually changing because of processes such as weathering and large earth movements. The rocks are gradually recycled over millions of years. This is called the rock cycle.

For example sedimentary rocks can be changed into metamorphic rocks, and these can be weathered and the pieces transported away. These pieces could be deposited in lakes or seas and eventually form new sedimentary rock. Many routes through the rock cycle are possible.

Here you can see the Rock Cycle according to the Geological Society.
