6. EDUCATIONAL APPROACHES Education of children with EBD in the Czech Republic has originally been provided mainly by segregated institutions. While the system of institutional care for children with EBD still exists, there has been a shift towards providing services, counseling and education in the least restrictive environment. Nowadays children with EBD may be educated in different settings according to the type and severity of their disorder and the type of dominant behavior ranging from regular schools to residential institutions and juvenile prisons. The notion of integration/inclusion has been central to the whole field of special education, including individuals with EBD. It means the delivery of appropriate, specialized services to children or adolescents with EBD in general education settings. These services are usually directed at improving students’ social skills, developing satisfactory relationships with peers and teachers, building targeted academic skills, and improving the attitudes of peers without disabilities. |
