Dear students,
Welcome to the course of Practical & Professional English 1!
What is it about?
The aim of this course is to provide you with a means for developing and extending your use of English with particular emphasis on English related to teaching. It focuses on TED Talks and provides a range of ideas and topics relevant to citizens of the world in the 21st century. The framework is based on the coursebook Keynote: Proficient (published by National Geographic Learning). The book is obligatory as we will use it in both semesters this year (more details about how to get it will follow).
What are the methods?
The classes will be based on class discussion, pair-work and group-work, listening, reading and speaking. A communicative approach will be used.
How to use the Interaktivní osnova?
Each section provides supplementary material related to the unit in the book that's being taught at that moment. It may contain articles, grammar practice, pronunciation tasks, etc. and includes the key to exercises (where necessary).
What are the requirements?
Obtaining the final credit for this course draws on continuous assessment throughout the term:
- active participation, contribution and preparation
- Placement Test (obligatory but no points allocated, available from 17/9 - 20/10):
https://adapt.cjv.muni.cz/ test.php?test=1881158767 - 1 oral presentation (10 pts; 3 mins, topic relevant to a unit, no technology, possible artifacts)
- 1 essay (10 pts)
- 2 forums (5 pts/each)
- credit test (written, passmark 70%)
Please read the instructions for the task you'll carry out in the course of your teaching practice. You will summarize your findings in Forum 2 which will open later in the semester.
ESSAY
- 350-400 words
- on paper
- deadline: 5 Dec 2018 (submit it in one of the classes/bring it to my office/leave it with the secretary)
- topic: "A reflection on your teaching practice" (your expectations and impressions of your first lessons taught to a class, your feelings about the atmosphere in the school/class, what went beyond your expectations, etc.; if you were to give one piece of advice to a novice teacher what would that be?)
