Exercise 1 - Master of ceremonies
- What kind of context is difficult for interpreting?
- Numbers.
- Names.
- Facts you are not familiar with.
- What do you find difficult?
- The personal accent of the speaker.
- Rhythm and speed of her/his speech.
- Segments
- Before we start questions
- How many seconds/segments of the speech you can remember by heart?
- Do you remember the facts?
- Are you a note-taker or do you prefer to remember things?
- So, let’s go
- Prepare a short (one minute) opening/welcome speech.
- Imagine yourself to be a host/Master of Ceremonies at the vent you like, close to you. For example:
- Oscars (you are the host)
- Opening a new season of rugby (you are the president of the rugby federation)
- Opening a new concert hall (you are the mayor of the city)
- Welcome the newcomers to your college (you are the dean of the faculty)
- Opening a new underground station (you are the mayor of the city)
- You can be anything you like
- Use some difficult parts – numbers, names, quantities, years
- Type it and check it carefully
- Now, imagine yourself being in the position of a consecutive interpreter and mark the logical segments in your speech. (Segment is a part you deliver to the audience and then stop and wait for your interpreter to provide the public with your text.
