Exercise 1 - Master of ceremonies

  1. What kind of context is difficult for interpreting?
    1. Numbers.
    2. Names.
    3. Facts you are not familiar with.
  2. What do you find difficult?
    1. The personal accent of the speaker.
    2. Rhythm and speed of her/his speech.
    3. Segments
  3. Before we start questions
    1. How many seconds/segments of the speech you can remember by heart?
    2. Do you remember the facts?
    3. Are you a note-taker or do you prefer to remember things?
  4. So, let’s go
    1. Prepare a short (one minute) opening/welcome speech.
    2. Imagine yourself to be a host/Master of Ceremonies at the vent you like, close to you. For example:
      1. Oscars (you are the host)
      2. Opening a new season of rugby (you are the president of the rugby federation)
      3. Opening a new concert hall (you are the mayor of the city)
      4. Welcome the newcomers to your college (you are the dean of the faculty)
      5. Opening a new underground station (you are the mayor of the city)
      6. You can be anything you like
    3. Use some difficult parts – numbers, names, quantities, years
    4. Type it and check it carefully
    5. Now, imagine yourself being in the position of a consecutive interpreter and mark the logical segments in your speech. (Segment is a part you deliver to the audience and then stop and wait for your interpreter to provide the public with your text.
    6. And be ready to present your work to your peers
