INTRODUCTION


Course requirements:

- active participation, home study
- preparing either 1 sentence or 2 nonsense words to be dictated
- final transcription of a piece of authentic audio(visual) material of your choice (60-80 words approx.)


NB Each session will open with checking your homework transcription for which you will be provided the key; together we will then discuss differences and answer your questions.

Some notes on the transcription procedure:

When checking the key, you may see linking /r/ occasionally written separately - this is just another way of transcribing it. However, if you follow the practice from our seminars and write the /r/ as part of the word it belongs to, it is perfectly acceptable, too.

If you come across phonemes written in italics, this suggests a possibility of colloquial elision.

In case there are footnotes displayed in the key, these will be addressed in class.
