A Guide for Beginning Teachers

Getting to know the School Counselling Centre

In the Czech Republic, there are School Counselling Centres (for more information about SCC, see SCC in the Glossary of selected terms). It is common for several staff members at each school to be part of the School Counselling Centre. The staff of the School Counselling Centre can help you find out what kind of support your pupils receive. They can also help you when you may not know how to approach the individual educational needs of pupils or relationship problems among pupils.

Ask to meet the educational counsellor or the special education teacher (for more information, see the Glossary of selected terms) if s/he is available. Ask for your pupils’ individual educational plans (for more information on IEP, see the Glossary of selected terms) and get familiar with the support measures you will be providing for them. Make a copy for your file of pupils records or make notes of IEP for each pupil you teach. Inquire which pupils are provided with the first-level support measures and make yourself familiar with their educational support plans if available. Consult with the counsellor and colleagues, what practices have proven to be successful in supporting individual pupils.

Meet the methodologist for prevention and see the school's minimal preventive programme for the current school year. Think about how you could incorporate some of the current year’s prevention topics into your teaching. Set up regular consultations with counsellors if needed and find out what counsellors might need from you during the school year (e.g., materials for evaluating the effectiveness of support measures, collaboration on primary prevention of risk behaviour activities etc.).
