A Guide for Beginning Teachers

How to formulate feedback to help a pupil with learning?

  1. We address the pupil by her/his name.
  2. We specify the good aspects (what s/he did well in relation to the goal).
  3. We make clear what needs to improve or adjust (e.g., in the form of a recommendation or a question).
  4. We try to motivate the pupil; encourage her/him to work further.

Do not be afraid to use words that help to build the relationship:

… I appreciate, I like, I am happy about, I enjoy, it pleased me…

Example

Jan, you did well in correctly using the past tense in affirmative statements. Let’s try to focus more on forming questions and negative statements. I appreciate you used complex sentences in your narration. I am looking forward to checking out your homework together with you. When preparing it, use the table of sample questions and negative statements. I believe you can do it.

Assignment: Provide formative feedback

Recall a particular pupil (it can be one from the past) and provide her/him with formative feedback related to her/his work, homework, project etc., containing the recommended information (maximum half a page A4, 900 characters).
