Teaching Young Learners
-----------------------------------------------------------
Purpose of this session;
-- to make participants aware of the reasons for teaching EFL to younger learners
-- to discuss the main differences between younger learners and older learners
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why teach EFL to younger learners?
-- Interest in the teaching of English to younger learners has been steadily growing in recent
years
-- There is a rapidly growing demand for it to be taught at even younger ages by parents who want to provide their children with a competitive educational advantage
-- As our societies become more multicultural, the need for understanding each other increases. Exposing children at an early age to foreign languages and understanding of foreign culture will help them grow up sympathetic and tolerant to others. It will also help them to broaden their views of the world.
-- It will give children the opportunity to communicate with other children who speak the language they are studying.
-- The earlier children begin learning a foreign language, the more years they will have to study and practise it. They will have an advantage later on because they will be able to use that language as a medium for study (e.g. English fo academic purposes).
