Literature for Children and Young Adults

Week 2: Extensive reading in and outside the classroom. Student reading autonomy and DEAR time. The classroom library.

1. Please watch the video below. I have selected this one deliberately, although it is in Czech and about primary/lower secondary. However, I think it is important to see that DEAR time can and does work in the Czech context.

If a non-native Czech speaker or not fancying this option, feel free to find, watch and share something else on the topic.

Once you have watched the video, please complete the first two tasks in Worksheet 5 (I know the numbering doesn't seem logical but there is a reason for it:-)

2. For the class, please bring a book that you are either reading now or one you think your (potential) class would enjoy. Alternatively, bring a book you like. Please note it is important to BRING THE BOOK PHYSICALLY.

3. Also, select a page in the book that somehow appeals to you and make a photocopy of it. Bring the photocopy with you.

4. Bring Worksheet 1 as well. We will try to finish the discussion.

After class (the task will be explained in class): Here are some other ways in which you can get students (esp. 14+) to respond to their reading. Please create at least ONE of the following:

a) the main character's business card  (i. e. imagine what sort of business card would Severus Snape or Lenny Small of Of Mice and Men have)

b) a meme

c) a book selfie (a photo of the book and artifacts/landscapes that are pertinent to it OR a photo of the reader in a costume or a pose with the book, see e. g. cosplays).

Here are some examples of how it can be done (options are endless):

Submit the final product into the Vaults below so that we can all enjoy it. Submission deadline: Wednesday, October 9.
