Credit requirements: 

  1. Attendence
  2. Active participation

  4. Final written test 70%
Maximum number of points per semester: 100

Pass mark: min. 70
Written test: max. 40 points (students must obtain at least 70% for this final written test - if not: two resits of the final test are offered)
Oral test: max. 30 points (students must obtain at least 70% for this final oral test - if not: two resits of the final test are offered)
Placement test: 5 points (regardless of the result)
Progress test: max. 5 points
Other types of continuous assessment: max. 20 points (journal 15 points, can-do statements + strategies 5 points)

Can-do statements - B1 level, at the beginning and the end of the semester.

Keeping a journal is a part of your continuous assessment. Every week you should write a few sentences about what you have learned, what you need to work on; you can also write about what is happening in the book you are reading, etc.

You should contribute to the journal every week = even if there is no class or if you do not come to the class.


Journal Assessment

Are there at least ten proper entries in your journal? Have you included your Placement test results comparison? - max. 5 points

Have you included your Smart Goals and reflection on your Smart Goals? - max. 5 points

How much have you written? How complex are your thoughts? - max. 5 points

Are you able to talk about your journal and take us through it? - you will talk about it during the speaking part of your final test.

BookEvery week, students are expected to spend at least 10 minutes reading a book of their own choice. They can then reflect on what they have read in the journal.

Unit 1 - First Class p.6-13

You learn how to: 

  • say more about yourself and other people
  • ask and answer common questions
  • ask follow-up questions and maintain conversations
  • describe how well you use different languages
  • pay more attention to the language in texts
  • tell better stories

We cover following grammar: auxiliary verbs and  to distinguish between certain tenses and narrative tenses (see the grammar reference below)

Make a graphic organizer with pictograms about yourself for GTK (get to know) activity. Just put pictures that symbolize your life together and let other ss to guess what means what.


We will have a discussion on the main picture, here are some useful phrases for speculating:

Here are some ways of talking about what we think might happen, when we don't really know.

10 expressions to Use In Speaking And Writing: 
  1. No doubt the Joneses will be there
  2. It's unlikely that she'll come now
  3. I bet / you can bet (that) they'll be late
  4. I imagine (that) it'll be busy
  5. The chances are that he'll win
  6. There's no chance of them coming now
  7. In all probability, it will be raining
  8. My guess is that she'll lose
  9. There's just a chance that it will work
  10. I wouldn't be surprised if it rained
How To Use These Phrases In Your English: 
  1. Phrase 6 suggests that we are certain that something is not going to happen.
  2. Phrases 1,2 and 7 are a little weaker. They are used when we think something is very likely or unlikely to happen.
  3. Phrase 3 is similar to phrase 1, but less formal.
  4. Phrases 4, 5, 8 and 10 are used when we think something is quite likely, but we aren't really very confident of it.
  5. Phrase 9 is much weaker. We think that something is unlikely, but is possible.
