Week 11 - Sustainability in project management

OBJECTIVE:

learning to approach projects from a global perspective

considering the whole life-cycle of a project when designing it


OUTCOME:

  • Students will gain experience with the complexities of sustainability management in projects. They will understand how different decisions impact the environment, society, and economy, and how to make balanced, informed choices under real-world constraints. 
  • filling in the sustainability indicator chart to indicate potential sustainability issues and to trace their potential impact throughout the lifecycle of a project

OUTLINE:

Ø  including global context / objectives during the planning: environment, society, economy (3 pillars of sustainability)

the "Triple Bottom Line":

  • Environmental Sustainability: Ensuring that natural resources are used and managed in ways that preserve ecosystems and biodiversity, minimize pollution, and mitigate climate change.
  • Social Sustainability: Fostering communities that are equitable, inclusive, and resilient, where people's rights and well-being are protected and enhanced.
  • Economic Sustainability: Creating economic systems that are efficient, equitable, and capable of supporting livelihoods without causing ecological degradation or social harm.

Ø  The whole lifecycle needs to be considered = initiation-planning-construction-USE-MAINTENANCE-END OF LIFE 

Ø  Considering the GOAL of the project (earned value = gains x losses)
