Course Description and Requirements for CJVA1P · The course is primarily based on EAP (English for Academic Purposes) through readings, videos, exercises, grammar quizzes, presentation preparation and writing tasks. · These are mainly presented in 10 seminars located in the Learning Materials folder, which you should work through independently. You can check your work using the Answer Keys that are provided. · Any discussion tasks and partner or group work you may find in the seminars should be done through the Discussion Forum (DF chat post in IS) https://is.muni.cz/auth/discussion/predmetove/phil/podzim2020/cjva1p/?lang=en, or by using MS Teams, where you can contact a classmate through a video call. · Grammar – in addition to the seminar materials, there are 10 links to Grammar Quizzes in your learning materials that you can work through week by week for extra practice. · The listening exercises are usually linked to the Internet, or are found in the Listening file in the Study Materials folder. · The Interactive Syllabus is NOT the main part of the course; it is ONLY a supplement to the 10 seminars in the Learning Materials folder. · Before completing the course, there will also be an anonymous Course Evaluation form that will be sent out during the exam period, which you should submit in IS before your mark is entered. · The main course requirements include the completion of a presentation by the end of the exam period, an accompanying summary on the topic, and your Language Learning Log: 1) Short ORAL PRESENTATION (6-8 minutes) on a topic relating to an aspect of your study area or interest (not the seminar topics, which are too broad). Your topic will be of your own choosing, reflecting an interesting aspect of your studies, or any special interest you may have that should also somehow be connected to your study area. The presentation will be uploaded in IS during the semester or exam period and should be based on the structure provided in the Presentation Skills seminar and on the Presentation Criteria posted in this folder. The minimum pass mark is 15/23 points based on the Presentation Criteria. 2) A WRITTEN SUMMARY of your presentation TOPIC will be submitted in printed form when you upload your presentation (about 150-200 words). It should be typed, double-spaced and spell-checked (i.e. you must set your computer program, such as Word, to English and make sure it is making corrections of spelling and grammar). 3) Along with the weekly quizzes, which you will be doing and checking on your own, you should also be keeping a weekly LANGUAGE LEARNING LOG (LLL). This could take the form of a journal of reflections on your personal language development, and a list of new words or phrases, which can be processed in any number of ways: translation from your mother tongue, definitions, usage in a sentence, synonyms, antonyms, pronunciation, word families, etc. This is up to you to decide how intensively you process each item. About 10 words/items per week (for a total of over 100 by the end of term) is advised. The words or reflections in your log may be from this course or any other English experience you may have during the semester. This should be submitted during the exam period.
