Dear Students; I hope you have all received your tests back annotated, graded and your final result calculated. I am happy to announce four A* results. I shall now be entering the passing results in the IS. If you have scored an E, D or even C you're not happy with, pls let me delete that grade and register for one of the remedial colloquia which can count as your very first exam date. You're now rather good at spotting the various accents' quirks. What still remains to be worked at are modern, innovated EE pronunciations, which a lot of you found difficult in the test, to my surprise (quoting test, section A): 3) /ˈsɑːə/; smoothing of triphthongs; other examples: flower, flour, devour, shower, tower, shire, admire, desire, tire, tyre 4) /enˈdʒjɔː/; merger of /ʊə/ with /ɔː/; other examples: sure, pure, poor, endure, fury 5) /ˌdrɔʳəˈtʰenʃn̩/; intrusive /r/; other examples: China and Japan, Buddha images, Cuba is, a vodka or two, raw apples. I shall miss our Friday mornings and wish you all good cheer and enjoyment of exploring. Please remember the wealth of materials we have gathered for the course, feel free to use them in the future to make connections to whatever varieties of English you hear around you, and maybe consider taking AmE Varieties next term. Kind wishes, Kateřina Tomková 2060@mail.muni.cz AJLA22066 Pronunciation Varieties of English AJL22066 Pronunciation Varieties of English AJL52066 Pronunciation Varieties of English
