Masaryk University Faculty of Arts Department of Art History Spring Semester 2023 Image, Object, Text: Theories and Methods in Art History and Visual Studies Code: DU1905 Credits: 8 Consultation meetings Below are the dates where you can discuss with me your ideas for the assessed presentation for the course. We shall have 15 minutes, so make sure you make good use of the time available. It is therefore a good idea to be prepared. Therefore: · Be clear about which work of art / architecture you wish to talk about – and also make sure you know where it is, and whether it is on display (and where)! If you are still undecided, prepare a shortlist of a maximum of 3 to discuss. However, for each one you need to check whether it is on display. If it is not on display, then it is not a good idea to choose it. · Be clear about the specific ideas / methods you wish to use in your presentation. It is these that I would like to discuss with you (ie, to discuss why you have chosen them, why you think they are relevant, how do they relate to what we have covered in the course). · This course is not testing your ability to collect factual information about the work. It is a test of your ability to use a method / debate in order to enhance the understanding of the work. So you will have to be able decide how you wish to interpret the work and why you wish to relate to a particular set of ideas / method. · Remember, there is not necessarily a single ‘correct’ interpretation. A work of art / architecture can be interpreted in many different ways. They key here is for you to be able to decide on a particular method of interpretation that is productive and that perhaps produces new and insightful understanding of the work in question.
