Civil Society and Human Rights in Eastern Europe

Battling Authoritarians Across the Post-Soviet Region

This is our last lecture, as the following two weeks will be devoted to your presentations. Our guest has been working in democracy and human rights organizations for about 15 years and has been covering Eastern Europe and Central Asia (with a particular focus on Russia). It will be an excellent opportunity for you to ask any questions that have come up during the course and that you are still wondering about. Have them ready!

At-home preparation prior to the class:

Please read a short article by Timothy Snyder, an American historian of Europe and a public intellectual on both continents.

I also suggest you watch the following video. It is part of Yale's course The Making of Modern Ukraine also by - again - Timothy Snyder, Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

Guest:

Rostislav Valvoda - Executive Director at the Prague Civil Society Center
