You are to answer both of the questions below. Each answer should be a minimum of 1000 words long.
You should use as references the readings available to you both in ELF and on the IS page for this
course. You may also use additional materials if you so choose.



1. How does United States Indian policy after 1830 reflect economic and social conditions through
time? In other words, how was each act of legislation or Supreme Court decision influenced by
economic and social factors within American society? Be specific.



2. Discuss how a specific immigrant or minority group (e.g. African Americans, Hispanic immigrants,
Jewish immigrants, Asian immigrants, Czech immigrantsm etc.) has dealt with the issue of
“Americanization” in the twentieth century using an example or exampless from popular culture
(film, literature, television, art). To what extent does the group you are looking at seek to
establish an identity outside or within the mainstream ideal of “American” based on the concept of
the “Melting Pot”?
