The Band's Visit/Eran Kolirin – 2007 1. Describe the opening image of the film. What is the meaning of the colors used in this scene? During the opening scene of the movie we are in a bus stop, someone is doing stuff in a van, when the van moves away we discovered that behind it there's a group of people that wearing the same clothes, the band. The colors used for this imagine was light but there's a huge contrast between the landscape and the colors of the clothes of our protagonists, I thought that it could be explained as the difference between the 2 country. 2. What is the film's style and genre? I think that this movie is a comedy. The plot develop in 24 hours it's the description of an full day, it's like a fable that or a novel with a base concept as a key to understand all the movie. Even if for me it seems a novel in this movie there's a slice of life that I had not see before in a Israeli movie. 3. Define the theme of the film in one or two words. What's the relationship between the theme and the film's title? Human Relationship. I thought that is the visit of something unexpected, and that unexpected thing sometimes create unexpected bonds as Dina and Taufik, they were outsiders but at the end of the movie they speak about their life and their failures. 4. Why does the band arrive to Beit Htikva instead of Petach-Tikva? How does this relate to the film's theme? They arrived there for a mistake made by the young member of the band (Haled) because of the wrong pronunciation of the "p" and Taufik thought that he was distracted by ticket woman beauty. This is a relation between Haled and Taufik, the old one Taufik when they arrived in the wrong stop became really mad with Haled and he said to him that after that journey he will report him and let him fired from the band. After the night where he talked to Dina about his son he understood that he was too rude with Haled as he did with his son so he forgave him and understood that the young people could make mistakes. 5. In one of the scenes Haled teaches Pappi, the insecure Israeli guy, how to treat the girl he wants. How is this related to the film's theme? When they arrived to Beit Htikva the local people treat them as unwelcome outsiders because they were Egyptian. During the movie the relationship of the character evolve, in that scene the moviemaker seems to winks to us, because it create a bond in front of our eyes. Is possible that this scene was made to make understand people that is possible create a bond even with your enemy. 6. How is the sound track (music, dialogue and effects) used in the film to convey its theme? The soundtrack during the movie change in base of the situations of the characters and the develop of the relation between Israeli and Egypt . At the start is quite sad and it make me feel lonely as the band in the bus station but after the conversation between Dina and Taufik, it become more intimate and personal as the bond that is creating between that two character.
