Ethics of AI

How to successfully complete the course

Dear students,

you have registered for Ethics of AI this semester.

The Ethics of AI is a free online course created by the University of Helsinki. The course is for anyone who is interested in the ethical aspects of AI. The aim is to encourage people to learn what AI ethics means, what can and can’t be done to develop AI in an ethically sustainable way, and how to start thinking about AI from an ethical point of view.

Artificial intelligence is already a part of our daily lives. When we post pictures to social media, search online or ask questions from chatbots, we’re interacting with AI. Authorities, such as cities, rely on AI for providing public services. And governments are seeking solutions to global problems by using algorithmically produced knowledge. The goal of this course is to help you to develop your own skills for ethical thinking. You can complete the course at your own pace.

This course is divided into following chapters:

  1. Introduction

  2. Non-maleficence

  3. Accountability

  4. Transparency

  5. Human Rights

  6. Fairness

  7. AI ethics in practice

The reflective questionnaire will be made available in the interactive curriculum during the semester. You will be notified by email.

How to assess success in passing the course:

The course itself is not graded, but the number of assignments you complete is tracked. You must complete at least 90% of the assignments, of which at least 50% must be answered correctly, to receive the certificate. Correctness is calculated as the average correctness of all the tasks completed (so all tasks have the same weight). Open answers are counted as 100% correct if they have been approved.

Course Study Period:

You may study the course at any time during the fall semester of 2024. The deadline for completing the course, generating a certificate, and completing the reflective questionnaire is January 10, 2025.
