To make it easier here is an easy overview of things you need to do for every chapter:
- Read the materials
- Watch the movie
- Record your meeting with your group
- Upload the meeting with a list of group members before the deadline
Hi and welcome to Mental Illness in Movies,
films are a perfect way how to explore the human mind, especially when something in our brain "goes wrong". This term our goal is to learn about a few mental illnesses, that are quite common among children and adolescents, and mostly adults, which will be the main focus of this course - if you are more interested in children's psychopathology, please sign in to our course 'Mental Illness in Movies - Children and Adolescents' in the spring semester.
We have prepared this online support so that you can enjoy yourselves while learning about interesting psychological illnesses and perhaps (at least we try to) be surprised by some facts.
Please do feel encouraged to go through the materials at your own speed and study as much as you want.
The subject is now completely online and as we have learned due to the coronavirus crisis, it still works pretty well :)
So how does it work?

Online Group Meeting and Discussion Recording
As you may have noticed, each movie and its corresponding discussion thread come with specific deadlines. Once the deadline has passed, it will no longer be possible to upload videos or add any further comments.
October, 7th - As Good As It Gets + The Hours
November, 4th - Death and the Maiden + Angels of the Universe
December 16th - Gone girl + Christmas Lecture
To make it easier here is an easy overview of things you need to do for every chapter:
Please refrain from expressing personal preferences about whether you liked or disliked the movie. The aim of the discussion is to engage in an in-depth, fact-based conversation about the depiction of mental illness in the film. Avoid recounting the plot of the movie, as everyone participating in the discussion is assumed to have already seen it. Your comments should center on your objective analysis and insights into the portrayal of mental illness in the film.
We will try and answer any unclear questions at the end of the term.
Also, do not forget to sign up for the exam date once you watched and contributed to every topic. There are 4 different dates provided however on these dates, there is no exam prepared for you: by signing up for the exam you confirm that you have fulfilled all the requirements for this course.
If you feel disturbed by any topic, please don´t force yourself to watch the whole film or study all the materials. It´s ok to skip things that make you uncomfortable. Just let us know.
If you have any further questions please send them to my assistant - Magdalena Štoková ( 552959@mail.muni.cz ).
So... are you ready to start?
