Psychology constructs: theory and methodology

Methodological aspects of development and adaptation of psychodiagnostic methods

This course focuses on the methodological aspects of creating and adapting psychodiagnostic tools. It addresses the key question of whether to develop a new assessment instrument or adapt an existing one, considering factors such as efficiency, comparability of results, and applicability. The course emphasizes the importance of adaptation, guided by international standards like those set by the International Test Commission, to ensure the quality and accuracy of psychometric tools. The course outlines the comprehensive process of adaptation, which includes multiple stages: preparation, test development, validation, and documentation. In the preparation phase, the suitability of the adaptation is assessed, including overlap in the definition of constructs between the original and target populations. The course also covers translation methods, including back-translation and double translation with expert evaluation, to ensure accurate language adaptation.

A significant portion of the course is dedicated to validation, discussing sample selection, measurement equivalence, and the statistical procedures used for evaluating the factor structure of psychometric tools. The course introduces the concept of measurement invariance, involving multiple steps to verify construct equivalence across different groups. Additionally, it addresses differential item functioning (DIF) as a critical consideration in test adaptation. This course is ideal for students and professionals in psychology, particularly those interested in psychometrics and the development or adaptation of psychological assessments.
