Bandrova Department of photogrammetry and cartography, UACG - Sofia bandrova_fgs@uacg.bg INTRODUCTION n COLORS -- possibility for right choice in the process of map compiling n COLORS - guarantee in design of cartographic products n Successful reproduction of colors -- it is possible when there are enough knowledge about them COLOR SYSTEMS n Ancient, astronomy based - consists 7 base colors corresponding of planets from Solar system n System of fire, water, air and earth n Aristotle -- 4 base colors n Signs of the zodiac -- connection with colors Ancient, astronomy based Signs of the zodiac COLOR SYSTEMS n model CIE 1931 (updated and changed in 1964 and 1976) COLOR SYSTEMS n SUBTRACTIVE COLOR SYSTEMS XIX c. SUBTRACTIVE COLOR SYSTEMS n RGB color system COLOR SYSTEMS n HVS color scheme (tonality) Hue, Value, Saturation Possible colors in 3 bits color system Number of colors in different color systems Number of colors necessary for map designing and screen visualizing n 3 000 000 colors laid abreast n 7 000 -- for not abreast colors Buildings' floors in 3D map Color definitions in 3D map Colors in map designing and pre-publishing process n 100% cyan for Hydrology n 20, 30, 40% S -- water areas -- see and oceans n 1,2,3 colors of CMYK -- area color n > 5% for every color n Clean colors (without black - K) CONCLUSIONS n Dimensions for color defining -- independent of color monitor and possibilities of print or publishing machines. n Traditional rules for map coloring could be kept. n Some limits in publishing process should be take into account in the first steps of map designing n Unification of the colors could be lead to their standardizations.
