DOC. RNDR. JANA KLÁNOVÁ, PH.D. RESEARCH CENTRE FOR TOXIC COMPOUNDS IN THE ENVIRONMENT MASARYK UNIVERSITY Identifying the research needs for the global assessment of hazardous chemicals Sound management of chemicals is essential if we are to achieve sustainable development including the eradication of poverty and disease, the improvement of human health and the environment and the elevation and maintenance of the standard of living in countries at all levels of development. The efficient environmental management requires comprehensive information on the key factors affecting environment: data on occurrence, fate, persistence and long-range transport of various chemicals, their accumulation in biota and food chains as well as on mechanisms of their toxicity, and related ecological and human health risks. Improved understanding of these processes can be achieved by linking field and laboratory scale experiments with various mass balance and transport models. It has to be supported by development of publicly available environmental and health databases facilitating improved interpretation, spatial visualization, and modeling of available data and improving the flow of relevant data to the environmental and health communities. Only such complex information can provide sufficient support for decision making and development of strategies related to protection of natural environment and human health. The lecture will overview current research efforts in the field of environmental chemistry performed in the Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment of Masaryk University and place it into the broader context of identified gaps, challenges and research needs associated with the global assessment of hazardous chemicals. ================================================================== doc.
