C5160 Physical chemistry - laboratory exercises
Opening week
Teaching starts according to schedule in the first working week of the semester. The taking a part on opening lesson is mandatory. Without attending the opening lesson, it is not possible to work in the laboratory.
The introductory lesson is led by the teacher of the relevant seminar group. The students familiarise, among other things, with the organization of the work in the laboratory and how to use of the interactive syllabi of the subject. They learn to do simple lab tasks properly, to use simple laboratory instruments, and are familiar with the teacher's requirements for obtaining a credit. In the following weeks, students will perform the selected tasks individually and gradually as stated in schedule of the tasks.
The schedule of the tasks during the semester for individual students is set in the opening lesson. Some shorter exercises can take place simultaneously as one task. Students are acquainted with the rules of the attendance. The replacement of absences in the exercise is only possible for serious reasons.
Home preparation to laboratory task. The student is obligated to know his schedule of assignments in the semester and to prepare to the exercise before work in laboratory. It is assumed that a significant part of the theory knowledge is already gain by student from the lectures of physical chemistry or general chemistry. If a student has doubts about his knowledge, he can read lectures or other study materials. During the home study, the student uses the information that is stored in the interactive syllabi. The main advantage of the interactive syllabi is to provide students with the study materials and the work instruction for the laboratory task. The syllabus may also include information on the extent to which the exercise is being performed. The teacher can also tests the student's home preparation for the workout before starting work in the lab by use of the “Readiness tests” for upcoming laboratory tasks by use of interactive syllabi.
Training in “Safety work and fire protection in chemical laboratory” (SW&FP). The training is a part of the opening lesson. The participation is mandatory. The knowledge of SW&FP will be tested via interactive syllabi. Successful passing the test is a prerequisite for starting work in the lab. http://www.rect.muni.cz/nso/Chemicke_latky/soubory/prirucka-en.pdf
Basic obligations of the student required to participate in practical exercises:
Report on laboratory exercise. The report on the results of the experimental work has to be prepared as soon as possible after the practical realization of the task. The report must have the mandatory structure that is given in the report form here. The report can be in the form of handwriting, PC printing or combining of these forms.

Basic obligations of the student required to participate in practical exercises:
- Passing SW&FP training, finished by signing the SW&FP form.
- Home preparation that includes the study of the instruction manuals with theory and successful passing the “Readiness test for upcoming exercise” (the last if given in interactive syllabi).
- Use of laboratory coat and shoes as well as other protective equipment.
- Proper filling in personal laboratory diary (including the calculations needed for upcoming exercise).
- Submission of the report from the previous task.
- Have the printed work instruction for the laboratory task and understand the meaning of each steps of the instructions..
- Have read the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all hazardous chemicals used in the laboratory task.
- Coming in time.
