English for Physics II

WEEK 9: Astrobites (Paraphrasing)

Astrobites is a website with rewritten scholarly articles. Graduate students rewrite them to make them easier to understand and follow. It might be a good start for reading astrophysical articles in English. Read the article ("Have You Ever Wanted to Generate Your Own Gravitational Waves?") about gravitational waves. Send to me a paper where you define:

1 gravitational waves

2 pulsars

and then describe one way of detecting gravitational waves explained in the article.

I want you to define the waves and pulsars using the info from the article - not from other sources. But you can't use the exact wording and sentences from the article - you must use your own words for the definitions and the detecting tools - that is, you have to paraphrase the article. More info about paraphrasing in the worksheet below.

Deadline: ideally by May 1, or later if you have serious reasons preventing you from meeting the deadline

One of the 7 topics for the oral exam are definitions, so you can later use your paper as a preparation for the exam.
