ESSAY WRITING

Basic guidelines for writing your essay:

1. Write an academic essay in an analytical style. You are required to choose one from the three assigned topics:
  •  Human impact on rivers

Review and discuss the ways humans altered, either directly or indirectly, the structure and dynamics of river channels and their floodplains. What are the environmental and economic consequences of the human interference with the fluvial systems?
  • Mapping and assessment of landslide hazard

Review and discuss the present day approaches to mapping, surveying and assessment of landslide type hillslope instabilities. What are the methods and data sources employed in the assessment of landslide hazard?

  • Quo vadis geomorphology?

Review and discuss the contemporary debates on the past and present trends in geomorphology as an academic and applied science. What are the strengths and weaknesses of geographically educated geomorphologists in delivering scientifically and socially relevant research outcomes?

2. Make literature survey when preparing material for essay writing using Masaryk University electronic resources. I have uploaded five key journal articles on each assigned topic to the IS.MUNI for you. Start with these five papers and add at least further five ones to get familiar with the elaborated topic.

3. When organizing the text, you should follow the following structure:
  • Introduction with a problem/topic statement
  • Elaboration of the problem/topic (the longest part of the essay)
  • Conclusions
  • List of references
4. The minimum length of your essay is to be at least 1500 words, maximum length is limited to 5000 words.

5. Submit your essay in an electronic form (pdf format) via IS.MUNI till 15th May 2020 or earlier. We will discuss your essay at the last meeting (i.e. 18th May).
