How can you tell that a source is credible?

The CRAAP test is a method to evaluate the credibility of a source you are using.

When conducting research, it’s important to use credible sources. They ensure the trustworthiness of your argument and strengthen your conclusions.

There are a lot of sources out there, and it can be hard to determine if they are sufficiently credible. To help, librarians at California State University developed the CRAAP test in 2004.

The CRAAP test has 5 main components:
  • Currency: Is the source up to date?
  • Relevance: Is the source relevant to your research?
  • Authority: Where is the source published? Who is the author? Are they considered reputable and trustworthy in their field?
  • Accuracy: Is the source supported by evidence? Are the claims cited correctly?
  • Purpose: What was the motive behind publishing this source?

Credit assignment

You need to draw on at least three sources when preparing your poster.
1. Find a source; it can be an article, a video or a podcast. If it's an article, the word range should be 500-1500; if it's a video or an audio, it should be bout 5-10 minutes long.

2. Make sure that it is credible.

3. Following the strategies discussed in the How to summarise handout, write a summary of 200-250 words for your teammates.

4. Typically, you don't include your opinion in a summary, but here you will write about a 50-word evaluation of the source for your teammates. Explain why you think the source is relevant to the topic of your poster presentation.

5. Submit the summary and your evaluation as one document to the syllabus (Poster project) by Week 5 (14 March, 23:55)

To sum up, the text of the summary will be 200-250 long. In addition to that, you will write about a 50-word paragraph describing the relevance of the source to your poster topic.
