English for Life Sciences: Monday groups

Week 8 Comparing & contrasting

TASKS FOR WEEK 10

Poster project:
Prepare a short overview of the conclusions. What did you find out when studying your sources? How do your findings support the main message of your research? (ca. 2 minutes)

Comparing & contrasting:
Compare and contrast two phenomena from your field of study (3 minutes) to share with your speaking partner in Week 10.

Test + reflection:
1) The test is open from Tuesday (Week 8) until Saturday, 15 April (23:55).
Once you have submitted the test, you will be able to go back to it and check what kind of mistakes (if any) you have made.

2) Prepare a short reflection on the test and your learning so far.
- What did the test show you? In other words, what are your strenghts and weaknesses?
- Were there any items/areas you have struggled with? If so, what are they?
- Can you see whether you made any progress in terms of your learning goals?

Make notes on the above and bring them to the Week 10 lesson. Be ready to speak for ca. 2 minutes. If you cannot make the Week 10 lesson, write a short summary of the above and submit it to the syllabus.

MOCK EXAM TEST

What can you expect to find in the test?

1. Listening: Watching a video or listening to an audio; completing gaps with the information from the recording

2. Reading & Vocabulary: A gapped text in which you are expected to fill out specialist vocabulary

3. Grammar: Completing sentences by choosing the right form of a grammar phenomenon, e.g.,  the passive and conditionals

4. Grammar: Asking questions about a piece of information in a sentence

5. Word formation: Completing gaps in sentences with the right form of a word given in brackets

6. Grammar: Choosing the right connector for a short passage

7. Reading & Vocabulary: Identifying synonyms for a word/phrase in a short text

8. Reading: Completing a text with missing sentences

Make sure that you have no outside help when taking the test.

There is no PASS / FAIL BORDER. The maximum number of points is 50. If you achieve less than 30 points (60 %), you are recommended to contact your teacher for a consultation.

There is no time limit. Still, make sure you have about 75 minutes of undisturbed time to complete the test. You may only take it once. If you experience technical difficulties, you may access your old attempt. If this does not work, contact me and I will re-open the test for you.

After you submit the test, you will be able to see which items you answered correctly and which incorrectly.

Read the instructions carefully!

In the first task (Listening), make sure you read and understand the questions before you play the recording. Try to predict the answers.  Play the video only twice.

Next, in the Asking questions task, do not leave out or replace any words.  The system will otherwise evaluate your answer as a mistake. If you think your answer is correct despite being marked as a mistake, note it down and ask about it in Week 10.
