ENGLISH FOR EARTH SCIENCE

ABOUT THE COURSE

 Dear students,

Welcome to the course English for Earth Science - for geologists (JAG01) and geographers (JAZ01). My name is Věra Hranáčová and I am currently teaching English for students of Earth Science, but I also taught math and medical students at Masaryk University.

Course Objectives
In this course you will start building a vocabulary of Earth Science which will improve your reading and listening comprehension. The topics are part of your first exam  JA001 (or second exam JA002). Face-to-face lessons should be devoted mostly to speaking – discussions, presentations and rivising your grammar. Do not say you cannot speak because your teachers were not good. It is almost all up to you to gain your knowledge of English and there are many ways.

Course Pre-requisites  - Entrance level B1
Use a diagnostic test (JTest)   and a Pre-entrance Test in Grammar  (Remember to add 2 points for each correct question and 1 point for all the other items to get at least 30 points.) With lower level, I am afraid,  you may find it too difficult to participate and work reasonably well.

Credit Requirements

  • 80% face to face lessons  - active presence
  • presentation on your home town
  • 7 ROPOTS: 5 on terminology and reading comprehension (Scientific methods, Mapping, Earth materials, Minerals, Rocks) and 2 revision tests on vocabulary.
  • One credit test (in Week 13).  Only one make up date!
